Last update: 16 May 2023

This privacy policy applies to all information collected through our Website (essaything.com) and related services operated by us (essaything.com). Queries about privacy should be sent to team@essaything.com

The information collected

Our main policy is to collect and record as little information about you as possible.

The list of data points collected about you is detailed below.

Analytics

We do not use 3rd party analytics services. We use privacy-friendly analytics software only, so your personal information is never transmitted or collected. We do not use cookies for tracking or analytics.

Authentication

To minimise security risks we rely on trusted 3rd party authentication providers. The main provider is Auth0 who operates the online login screen and the data flow between your identity provider (e.g. Google). Auth0 GDPR statement: https://auth0.com/security

To be able to identify you and prevent others from accessing your essays, we also rely on identity providers:

  1. Google

We never see or store your password or other credentials. Your login is as secure as you make it via your identity provider.

When you log in to the Website, we receive several data points about you (email, avatar, user ID, name). We record the following information:

  1. Your user ID as provided by the authentication provider (see above). This ID is used to uniquely identify you in our system. When you delete all your essays the user ID is gone from our system.

Other data points might be displayed on the website but they are never stored on our systems.

Essay data

Anything you write and save as an essay is stored in our databases unencrypted and is potentially accessible to the relevant employees. We might read essays in our database for the purposes of product improvement and technical development.

The Ai suggestions are generated by “Generative AI Providers”, which are the following 3rd parties:

When you ask for AI powered suggestions or services, we send some parts of your essay to the above parties (e.g. keywords, title, selected text for auto-completion etc). We transmit hashed user IDs, meaning the 3rd party will not be able to identify you or link you to your identity provider.

Note: You should consider the whole text of your essay as potentially being transmitted to generative AI providers.

Payments and Financial Data

We do not directly handle online payment but rely on a 3rd party provider: Stripe (privacy policy).

When you set up a subscription, Stripe will capture your name and parts of your address.

We do have access to these data points but

The Stripe recorded data might be used in case of a financial dispute.

Infrastructure

Our servers run on Google Cloud Platform, operated by Google. This platform might potentially record personal information e.g. IP address in their operational logs.

We do not copy or transmit these data points. We do have access to these logs and they might be used to combat abuse or handle technical problems.

Disclosing your data

We never share or sell your data or essays to 3rd parties. We do comply with legal requirements i.e. we will disclose data requested by legal authorities.
